Flying Raptors for Education

Flying Raptors for Education

Home
Welcome to The Northern Illinois Raptor Center
RTHSeeing live birds of prey in a static display is fascinating. However, our experience has shown that students become more engaged and involved when they see these magnificent creatures in flight. We offer flighted programs as well as opportunities to get up close to our raptors. The Northern Illinois Raptor Center is a non-for-profit organization that was formed to bring together the different groups of specialists in the area of birds of prey. We enjoy educating the public about these magnificent creatures.

TNIRC Mission Statement

barred in snowTo ensure the health of raptors and the community we share through education, research, and conservation.

  • Raptors, or birds of prey, live in every habitat around the world. They play an important role in maintaining the natural balance of our ecosystem. Their presence indicates a healthy environment.
  • Our raptor center focuses on birds of prey native to Illinois and emphasizes the importance of preserving their required habitat.
  • Our programs tie education and recreation together by providing the general public an opportunity to witness raptors up close, and occasionally in flight. This increases both awareness and appreciation of the environment.

Leaving Our Nest

Time to leave the nest? Another Barn Owl will soon be released at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. TNIRC members worked with the DuPage County Forest Preserve to help raise the young chicks. It was quite exciting to incubate the eggs and watch as they "pipped" out (hatched). The challenge was wrestling the chicks away from their foster Mom when it was time for their daily health check. Donning a feeding costume (think camouflage)allowed us to care for the owls while not imprinting "human" on them - allowing them to stay wild. Interested in learning more? Check out our Barn Owls - Return to the Wild! program.

Looking to Adopt

  Barred Owl

We are always looking to acquire additions to our flock. At the moment we have several raptors that are being housed at our member's mews. Since we offer flighted education programs, it is important for our birds to have flight training. We will start flying the birds in October in preparation for our flighted programs in November and throughout the winter.
